Axle Loads: What a Loaded Concrete Truck Actually Weighs

Most of the broken floors I get called out to look at were broken before anybody bought a bucket of resin. There is a shop in Manitou Springs I still think about — 5,000 square feet of decent 4,000 psi concrete, one corner at the overhead door shattered into a fan of cracks with the middle piece sitting a half inch low. The owner asked me to “blend that corner in.” What put it there was a propane bobtail that swung wide off the alley once a month for nine years and parked its rear tandem three feet from where the concrete ended.

I coat floors. I do not pour them. But I have to know what has been driving on a slab, because a coating adds exactly zero structural capacity — something I say to somebody about once a month.

The numbers I keep in my head

Concrete weighs roughly 4,000 lb per cubic yard, which does most of the work here. A mixer hauling 9 or 10 yards carries 36,000 to 40,000 lb of payload on a truck weighing 26,000 to 30,000 lb empty, so a loaded ready-mix truck grosses 66,000 to 80,000 lb. One cubic yard outweighs most sedans.

Others I run into on small sites:

  • Truck-mounted concrete pump: 60,000 to 80,000 lb, concentrating far more than that through four outrigger pads once the boom swings out.
  • Loaded roll-off truck: 50,000 to 66,000 lb, the container’s steel rollers carrying a big share on a few square inches.
  • Residential trash truck: 51,000 to 64,000 lb loaded, often 18,000 to 20,000 lb on the steer axle alone.
  • Propane or fuel bobtail: 26,000 to 33,000 lb.
  • Class A motorhome: 26,000 to 45,000 lb; a dually with a fifth wheel, 20,000 to 26,000 lb.
  • Parcel delivery van: 10,000 to 19,500 lb — the one nobody worries about, and the one that comes daily.

Federal Interstate limits cap a single axle at 20,000 lb, a tandem at 34,000 lb and gross weight at 80,000 lb, with axle spacing governed by the Bridge Formula. FHWA publishes the size and weight rules, and states routinely permit more off the Interstate. None of it applies to your driveway — nobody weighs a truck before it turns in.

Gross weight is not what breaks a slab

This trips up nearly everyone. Spread 34,000 lb across a tandem’s eight tires and each tire carries about 4,250 lb over 60 to 80 square inches of contact patch — call it 55 to 70 psi at the surface. Less pressure than a jack stand puts down. Concrete at 4,000 psi does not care about 70 psi.

Three other things break slabs:

  • Where the load lands. A load in the middle of a panel has roughly twice the capacity it has at a free edge, and a corner is worse still. That Manitou Springs failure was a corner load, not an overload.
  • What is under it. A slab spanning a soft spot is a beam in bending, and concrete is weak in tension — 400 to 600 psi flexural against 4,000 psi in compression. Wash a little base out from under an edge and the arithmetic changes completely.

Repetition does the quiet damage

Pavement engineers count traffic in equivalent single axle loads referenced to an 18,000 lb axle, and damage scales roughly with the fourth power of axle weight. Double the axle load, do about sixteen times the damage. A 2,000 lb car axle is about 0.0002 of one heavy pass — which is why a driveway that survived twenty years of minivans dies in a season of concrete trucks.

It explains the pattern I see: nothing for years, a hairline in a wheel path, then a full break the next spring. In a high-altitude climate with well over 100 freeze-thaw cycles a year, water gets into that hairline and finishes it.

What this means before anyone coats or pours

Rough guidance when an owner asks what a slab can take: 4 inches unreinforced at 3,000 psi is a car and a pickup. Five to 6 inches at 4,000 to 4,500 psi with #4 rebar at 18 inches on center, over a base compacted to 95 percent Proctor, handles an occasional loaded truck. Routine heavy traffic wants 6 to 8 inches and a thickened edge of 10 to 12 inches where vehicles cross onto the slab. Going from 4 inches plain to 6 with steel adds roughly $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot at the pour — always cheaper than doing it twice.

Will a 4 inch driveway hold a concrete truck? Sometimes once, often not twice, almost never at the edges. Four inches of unreinforced concrete over average subgrade is built for cars. Most drivers can chute from the street or apron, or a pump can reach 80 to 100 feet — far cheaper than replacing a panel.

Does a floor coating add any load capacity? None. A typical system is 15 to 40 mils, about the thickness of a business card, and its job is abrasion, chemical and stain resistance. Capacity comes from thickness, strength, reinforcement and the base. Fix structure first, then coat.
