Rebar, Mesh and Fiber: What Each Does for Load
Two winters after the flex yard was poured, I called the contractor about a crack running eight feet across the lane where delivery trucks turn. He asked me to read him the line from the bid. It said “fiber reinforced, 5 inch.” He said, politely, that fiber does what fiber does, and that the crack was doing what an unreinforced slab does under a turning axle. He was right. I had approved the substitution myself: the alternate saved $0.70 a square foot on 9,400 feet, and I did not know what I was giving up.
What reinforcement does not do
None of it stops concrete from cracking. Concrete shrinks 0.04 to 0.06 percent as it dries, a half inch across 100 feet, and being weak in tension it relieves that by cracking. Joints decide where. Reinforcement decides what happens next: whether the crack stays hairline and interlocked or opens, and whether the two sides still hand a wheel load across. Ask a bidder what a product does after cracking rather than whether it prevents cracks, and the sales language falls away.
Fiber: real, and oversold
- Micro synthetic fiber, about 1.5 lb per cubic yard, $6 to $12 per yard. Controls plastic shrinkage cracking in the first hours while the slab is soft. Worth having on nearly any exterior pour. Contributes nothing to load capacity.
- Macro synthetic fiber, 3 to 6 lb per yard, $30 to $60 per yard, roughly $0.25 to $0.50 per square foot at 6 inches. Gives residual strength after cracking and holds a crack tight. A legitimate replacement for welded wire in light-duty paving, not for bar where trucks turn.
- Steel fiber, 25 to 50 lb per yard, $60 to $120 per yard. Industrial floors, usually alongside dowels rather than instead of them.
The catch with fiber is that it is spread everywhere and concentrated nowhere, while wheel loads concentrate at edges and joints. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association publishes plain-language sheets on fiber and crack control.
Welded wire: cheap, and usually in the wrong place
6 by 6 W2.9 mesh costs $0.25 to $0.55 per square foot installed. It works only if it sits in the upper third of the slab, and usually it does not. Rolled mesh hooked up with a rake during placement ends up mostly at the bottom. Sheets on chairs at 3 feet on center behave far better and cost more in labor. My rule: chairs in the bid, or the mesh comes out and macro fiber goes in for a similar number.
Rebar and dowels: what carries wheel loads
For anything a loaded truck drives on, #4 bar at 18 inches on center each way, chaired to mid-depth, is the baseline, and #4 at 12 inches for dumpster pads, ramps and turning lanes. Installed, $0.70 to $1.30 per square foot at 18 inch spacing and $1.20 to $1.90 at 12 inch. What it buys is not a crack-free slab but one whose cracks stay tight enough for aggregate interlock to keep working, so the panel behaves as one piece under an axle and de-icer never reaches the steel. Field steel gets the attention, but on truck-trafficked slabs failures start at joints. Smooth dowels, 3/4 inch by 18 inches at 12 inches on center, greased on one side so the joint can still open, transfer the wheel load between panels. Without them each panel takes the hit alone at its weakest point: faulting, spalled joint edges, pumping. Dowels run $8 to $18 per linear foot of joint, $3,200 to $7,200 on a yard with 400 feet of joint. Highest return on the reinforcement page, and missing from most small commercial bids unless you ask.
What the choice costs across a property
Take a 12,000 square foot lot. Moving from mesh to #4 at 18 inches on center plus dowels at the truck joints adds $1.00 to $1.50 per square foot, $12,000 to $18,000 on a job near $130,000, or 10 to 14 percent.
The other column: replacing 3,000 square feet of failed drive aisle at $12 to $18 per square foot is $36,000 to $54,000, at year 8 to 12 instead of year 30, plus a week of restricted access and the tenant calls. Amortized, the reinforced lot runs $0.36 per square foot per year and the cheap one $0.62, before downtime. I have run that on three properties and it lands the same way every time.
Frequently asked questions
Can fiber replace rebar in a commercial slab? Macro synthetic or steel fiber can replace welded wire mesh in light-duty paving and some interior floors. Neither replaces bar and dowels on lanes carrying loaded trucks, dumpster pads or ramps, since fiber is spread uniformly while truck loads concentrate at edges and joints. If a bid substitutes fiber for steel, ask for it as a priced alternate.
Does more steel mean fewer cracks? No. Joint spacing and depth determine where cracking happens; steel determines how wide those cracks get and whether load still transfers. A reinforced slab with a bad joint layout still cracks, it just cracks tight instead of open, which is what you are paying for. Masonry works to the same principle in the bed joints — a Staten Island masonry contractor uses reinforcement to keep a crack tight rather than to prevent it.
Is reinforcement worth it on a small pad? Yes, and it is the cheapest place to buy it. On a 10 by 20 loading area, unreinforced to 6 inches with #4 at 12 inches on center costs $300 to $450 more. Replacing that pad after it breaks runs $2,400 to $3,600 plus a dock door closed for days.
