Turning Radius and Apron Width for Delivery Access

There is a flex-bay building in Doral where I have poured the same apron corner twice. First time, the general contractor drew a 20 foot wide drive off the street because that is what fit on the site plan. Then the tenant started taking 53 foot trailers. Every one of them cut the inside corner, dropped a set of tandems off the edge of the slab onto raw sand, and by month eight there was a piece of concrete the size of a dining table broken clean out. We repoured it at 30 feet wide with a thickened edge and it has held for four years.

Apron width and turning radius are not design flourishes. They are the difference between a slab that gets loaded where you built it strong and a slab that gets loaded three feet outside its edge.

Know your design vehicle before you draw anything

Every access design starts with the biggest truck that will actually use it. The standard design vehicles are worth knowing by name:

  • SU-30 single unit truck (box truck, most trash trucks): about 30 feet long, minimum outside turning radius around 42 feet, inside radius near 28 feet.
  • WB-62 or WB-67 semitrailer (the 53 foot van you see at every dock): outside radius around 45 feet with the trailer rear wheels tracking as much as 15 to 20 feet inside the path of the tractor’s steering axle.

That off-tracking number is the one people miss. The tractor clears your curb by a comfortable margin and the trailer tires still roll across the corner. Federal Highway Administration guidance on design vehicles and turning templates is the reference most civil engineers work from, and the FHWA design vehicle standards are public if you want the actual swept path drawings rather than a rule of thumb.

Widths that work

For a commercial two-way driveway taking single unit trucks, 24 to 30 feet of throat width is the practical range, with curb return radii of 25 to 35 feet. If semitrailers are in the mix, go to 30 to 35 feet of width and 40 to 50 foot return radii, or add a mountable flare.

Residential is a different scale: a 12 foot drive flared to 16 to 20 feet at the street handles a box truck without the driver climbing the lawn. The mistake at both scales is a hard square corner where the drive meets the street, because that corner is exactly where wheel loads concentrate.

Build the edge for where the wheels actually land

An unsupported slab edge is the weakest point in any pavement. A wheel load applied at the free edge produces roughly double the tensile stress of the same load applied in the interior. So the corners trucks cut are both the least supported and the most loaded part of the slab. That is why they break first.

What we build in Miami-Dade for truck access:

  • Slab at 7 to 8 inches, 4,000 to 4,500 psi, with #4 rebar at 12 to 18 inches on center both ways.
  • A thickened turn-down edge at 12 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches wide around the perimeter and both sides of the drive throat.
  • Dowels, 3/4 inch smooth bar, 18 inches long at 12 inches on center, at the joint between apron and street pavement so the two slabs move together instead of stepping.
  • 8 to 12 inches of compacted limerock base over the sand subgrade, at 98 percent modified Proctor.

The sand matters here. South Florida subgrade is fine sand with a water table that can sit within three to five feet of grade, and saturated sand does not compact and does not stay put. Water moving under a slab edge pumps fines out and leaves a void, and then the concrete is spanning air. We keep the base drained, compact in lifts of six to eight inches, and pull the grade high enough that stormwater sheds off instead of sitting on the joint line. The other constraints that get missed

Fire apparatus access has its own geometry, usually stricter than the tenant’s delivery truck. Trash service has minimum approach and overhead clearance requirements too, covered under trash truck and fire access requirements. Grade change matters too: any break steeper than about eight percent over a short distance will hang up a low-clearance trailer, so spread transitions over 15 to 20 feet. And where an accessible route crosses the drive, ADA slope limits apply regardless of how the trucks turn.
