Concrete, Asphalt or Pavers for a Driveway
Three bids on the same 640 square foot driveway came back at $5,100, $9,900 and $15,400. Same slope, same access, same week. The low one was asphalt, the middle concrete, the high one interlocking pavers, and none of the three sheets explained the spread. I called all three estimators back and asked them to walk me through their own numbers.
What you are actually buying
Asphalt is what engineers call flexible pavement. It bends with the ground under it, which is why it tolerates a subgrade that moves seasonally. It also softens in heat, stiffens in cold, and lives or dies on a binder that starts oxidizing the day it is laid. One estimator put it bluntly: asphalt is a maintenance product, and if you have no intention of sealing it, you should not buy it.
Concrete is rigid pavement. It spans soft spots instead of following them, so a small void underneath does not show up as a dip. It shows up later as a crack, somewhere you did not choose. In exchange it needs no sealing and shrugs off point loads that dent asphalt: a trailer jack, a dumpster wheel, a kickstand in August.
Pavers are neither. Each unit is its own small rigid element on a flexible base, so the system absorbs movement in many small increments instead of one large one. That is genuinely useful on ground that heaves, and it also means the base is the entire job. The reason paver bids run high is not the pavers.
The numbers, and what moves them
- Asphalt: $7 to $13 per square foot installed, typically 3 inches of compacted mat over 6 to 8 inches of aggregate base. Sealcoating every 3 to 5 years at $0.20 to $0.45 per square foot.
- Concrete: $8 to $16 per square foot for a 4 inch broom-finished slab at 4,000 psi; $11 to $20 at 6 inches with #4 rebar at 18 inches on center, the section people move to for RVs and delivery trucks.
- Pavers: $16 to $30 per square foot, higher with borders and pattern work. Close to a third of that is excavation plus 8 to 12 inches of compacted base and bedding sand.
- Stamped or colored concrete: $14 to $25, awkwardly between the other two on price and upkeep.
The largest variable inside every one of those ranges is what happens below grade, the part nobody photographs. Two of my three bids carried a line reading “site prep” with no depth, no material and no compaction standard attached, which made them impossible to compare. Which line items are worth arguing over is the subject of what drives the cost of a concrete driveway.
Climate does more of the choosing than taste does
Asphalt struggles where summers are long and hot. On the Gulf Coast, mats rut under nothing heavier than a parked pickup once the binder softens enough to make a tire print permanent. Along the Front Range the same material does comparatively well, flexing through freeze-thaw instead of fracturing, and road salt does not touch it.
Concrete reverses that. It is indifferent to heat and vulnerable to de-icers soaking into saturated surface pores, which is why air entrainment of 5 to 7 percent matters enormously in northern states and not at all in Miami. On expansive clay, both rigid options want the same thing: a stable, moisture-conditioned base rather than a thicker slab.
Pavers earn their premium in severe frost, where a jointed surface survives movement better, and in stormwater, since permeable systems over open-graded aggregate infiltrate rather than shed. Repair is where the difference gets loud
Asphalt repairs cheaply. Crack filling runs $1 to $3 per linear foot, a saw-cut patch $150 to $500, and a 1.5 to 2 inch overlay over sound pavement runs $3 to $6 per square foot and buys another decade.
Concrete does not patch invisibly, ever. You replace by the panel, between existing joints, at roughly $900 to $2,500 for a typical section, and the new panel will not match the old one in color. Anyone promising otherwise is guessing.
Pavers win here, and not by a little. A settled area gets lifted, the base rebuilt and the same units reset, usually $8 to $15 per square foot over the affected area. One installer told me the honest pitch for pavers is not appearance, it is that a utility trench can be made to disappear.
Frequently asked questions
Which surface lasts the longest? Concrete, in typical residential service: 30 years or more against 15 to 20 for asphalt. Pavers can outlast both because units are individually replaceable, but only if the base under them was built right.
Can concrete be poured over an old asphalt driveway? It is done, and it is a compromise. Asphalt is compressible, so it acts as a soft base under a rigid slab, and you still need full thickness on top plus elevation for the garage and street to work. Removal runs $1 to $3 per square foot.
Do pavers sink over time? Individual units settle when the bedding layer or base was thin, poorly compacted, or built without edge restraint. Properly restrained pavers over 8 to 12 inches of compacted base stay put; sunken driveways are base failures wearing a decorative surface.
