Control Joints: Where Concrete Is Supposed to Crack
A 5,400 square foot equipment yard apron was placed on a July morning and sawed the next day starting at 9:40. By then three panels had cracked full depth, right across where the saw lines were about to go. That job had paid for set-time testing, so I had a chart: final set at 4:20 that morning. The joints were five hours late.
I do the sampling and read the reports that come back; nobody asks me when the saw crew shows up. But when a slab cracks and everyone starts talking, the set-time chart and the batch tickets are the only documents with numbers on them.
A control joint is a crack you get to pick
Concrete shrinks as it dries, roughly 0.04 to 0.06 percent for ordinary flatwork, about 3/32 of an inch across a 15 foot panel. Friction against the subgrade restrains it, restraint puts the slab in tension, and concrete carries almost no tension. It relieves that tension by cracking, and nothing prevents it. A joint cuts a weakened plane so the crack forms where you put it and hides in a groove.
Depth and spacing
Depth is what gets shorted. A conventional sawed joint has to reach one quarter of the slab depth to start the crack below it: 1 inch on a 4 inch slab, 1.5 inches on a 6 inch slab. Early-entry saws work differently and are generally accepted at about 1 inch on slabs up to 9 inches. A 1/2 inch decorative score line is not a control joint; I have walked slabs where the pattern was beautiful and the cracks ignored it.
Spacing runs 24 to 30 times the slab thickness — thickness in inches, answer in feet:
- 4 inch slab: 8 to 10 feet.
- 5 inch slab: 10 to 12 feet.
- 6 inch slab: 12 to 15 feet.
- 8 inch slab: 16 to 18 feet, and 18 is a practical ceiling.
Panels want to be close to square, length no more than about 1.5 times width, with no L shapes or notches around a column — a re-entrant corner cracks from the inside corner every time. The joint layout guidance from the Portland Cement Association belongs on the tailgate before the forms go in.
Timing is a set question, not a clock question
The saw window opens once the surface is hard enough not to ravel and closes before the slab has built enough strength to crack on its own. Call it 4 to 12 hours, though the range means little without a temperature. On a 92 degree afternoon with concrete arriving at 88 degrees I watched it close inside 3 hours; on a 45 degree November pour it was still open at 20.
The field check is the ravel test: run the saw a foot and read the cut. Aggregate tearing out of the edge means wait. Where testing is in the budget we measure instead — penetration resistance, initial set at 500 psi, final set at 4,000 psi.
Why joints fail anyway
- Sawed too late. The crack already happened and the joint is decoration.
- Sawed too shallow. Under a quarter depth the slab cracks wherever it likes.
- Steel run straight through. Continuous mesh or rebar across a joint holds the plane closed and pushes the crack elsewhere. Reinforcement stops at the joint, or becomes a greased dowel.
- Water added at the truck. Going from a 4 inch slump to a 7 costs roughly 150 to 250 psi off the 28-day break per extra gallon per cubic yard, and raises shrinkage.
- No isolation joint. Where a slab meets a foundation wall or a column it needs a full-depth compressible break, not a groove.
- Curing skipped. A surface that dries hard and fast, normal at altitude in dry air, cracks before the saw arrives.
Joints under wheel loads
A joint is the weakest line in a slab and heavy vehicles find it. Load transfer runs on aggregate interlock, which quits once the crack under the joint opens past about 0.035 inch. Truck traffic means dowels: 3/4 inch smooth bars, 18 inches long, 12 inches on center, greased on one side. Undoweled joints in a truck lane eventually step, and once one side sits proud every axle hammers the edge. Frequently asked questions
How soon after a pour should control joints be cut? Generally 4 to 12 hours with a conventional saw, or 1 to 4 hours with an early-entry saw, and the real answer on any given day comes from the concrete rather than the clock.
How far apart should joints be on a 6 inch driveway? Twelve to 15 feet, in panels close to square. On a 20 foot wide drive that means a lengthwise joint down the middle as well as cross joints, since a 20 by 13 foot panel cracks across the long dimension.
Why did my slab crack even though it has joints? Timing and depth are the usual reasons, and both are checkable afterward. Measure the groove and see whether it reached a quarter of the slab thickness. Then look at where the crack starts — out of an inside corner or off the edge of a stoop is geometry, and no joint spacing would have fixed it.
