Curing Time vs Load Time: When Can You Drive On It

Twenty-eight days is the most repeated number in residential concrete and the most misunderstood. In one week I heard a homeowner told to keep every vehicle off a new driveway for a month, and watched a finishing crew drive a loaded pickup across a slab that was two days old. Both can be correct, which is the part nobody explains.

What the 28 days is actually for

It is a testing age, not a waiting period. When a slab is specified at 4,000 psi, sample cylinders go to a lab and get crushed at 28 days to confirm the mix delivered what was ordered. That milestone belongs to the supplier and the specification, not to the person who owns the driveway.

Concrete gains strength on a curve that flattens. Rough percentages of the 28 day value, which a lab technician described to me as fine for planning and not for engineering: about 40 percent at 3 days, 65 to 70 percent at 7 days, 85 to 90 percent at 14 days. A 4,000 psi driveway is near 2,800 psi at the end of week one, already more than a car requires.

The timeline people can actually use

  • Foot traffic: 24 to 48 hours, once the surface no longer marks under a thumbnail.
  • Bikes, mowers, light wheeled loads: 3 days.
  • Passenger cars and light pickups: 7 days, the number most contractors give and the one that matches the strength curve.
  • Loaded trucks, RVs, dumpsters, equipment: 28 days, and on a driveway never designed for that load, waiting longer does not make it safe.

Temperature moves all of it. Strength gain tracks the concrete’s own temperature, so a slab poured at 45 degrees can take about twice as long to reach the same strength as one poured at 70. Late season work is where the 7 day rule quietly becomes a 10 to 14 day rule.

Curing is something you do, not something you wait through

Curing means keeping water in the concrete so the cement can keep reacting, and it is an active job with a cost attached. Leave a fresh slab to sun and wind and the surface dries in hours, so the top layer never reaches the strength the mix was capable of. That is the slab that starts shedding sand in year three.

Standard practice holds moisture in for at least 7 days, by spray-applied curing compound at $0.05 to $0.15 per square foot, wet burlap, or plastic sheeting. In dry, windy or high-altitude conditions the evaporation rate can outrun bleed water within an hour of finishing, which is why crews there fog the surface before it looks dry.

What actually damages a young slab

Concrete driven on too early rarely gets crushed. It cracks, and it cracks over the soft spots: a young slab spanning a poorly compacted area is carrying more than it can yet carry. The day-four failures I have seen photographed are almost always base problems a mature slab would have survived.

The other early clock has nothing to do with loading. Control joints have to be cut roughly 4 to 12 hours after placement with conventional equipment, or 1 to 4 hours with early-entry saws, and missing that window produces random cracking that no waiting period fixes. Does concrete keep gaining strength after 28 days? Yes, slowly, as long as moisture is available for the cement to keep hydrating. A 4,000 psi mix often tests higher at a year. It is real but not worth planning around, because the gain after the first month is small next to what thickness and base support contribute.

Does cold weather change how long I have to wait? Substantially. Below about 50 degrees, strength gain slows enough that the usual 7 day figure for cars stretches to 10 to 14 days. Below freezing, concrete that has not reached roughly 500 psi can be permanently damaged, which is why cold pours involve blankets, insulated forms and accelerating admixtures.

What happens if a truck drives on it too early? Sometimes nothing visible, and sometimes a crack that appears weeks later and gets blamed on the mix. The damage is a bending failure over a weak spot, so the outcome depends on what is under the slab more than on how new the concrete looks.
