Driveway Widths and Parking Two Cars Comfortably
My back pad measured 19 feet across and I called it a two-car pad for six years. It is two cars right up until somebody has to get out. Park a crew cab on one side and a sedan on the other, and whoever is in the middle opens a door into sheet metal. Before I repoured it I ran a tape over everything in my lot that week.
I fix cars for a living. Concrete I learned late, rebuilding the shop floor for two lifts and then the customer pad out back. Vehicle dimensions I already knew.
Published widths leave out the part that hits things
A vehicle’s listed width is the body. The mirrors are what contact things.
- Midsize sedan: about 6 feet of body, 6 feet 6 inches across the mirrors.
- Midsize crossover: 6 feet 4 inches of body, roughly 7 feet 2 inches mirror to mirror.
- Half-ton crew cab: 6 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 10 inches of body, 8 feet or more with the mirrors out.
- Three-quarter ton with tow mirrors: over 9 feet, and nobody folds them.
Then the door. Opened far enough that an adult steps out rather than squeezes out, a front door wants 30 to 34 inches of clear space. A car seat or a parts box wants closer to 40.
The widths that actually work
- 10 to 12 feet: one vehicle, single file. Ten is tight for a pickup.
- 16 feet: two vehicles fit on the concrete. One inside door opens.
- 18 to 20 feet: two midsize vehicles with both inside doors usable. The standard double.
- 22 to 24 feet: two full-size trucks, doors on all four sides, room to walk behind with a toolbox. What I built.
Add three feet anywhere a wall, fence or raised landscape edge runs along the slab, because that side is gone. A striped stall in a commercial lot is normally 9 by 18 feet.
Depth, and the maneuvering nobody draws
Length surprises people more than width. A midsize sedan is 15 to 16 feet. A half-ton crew cab with a 5.5 foot bed is 19 feet 6 inches to 20 feet. A three-quarter ton long bed runs 22 to 23 feet. Plan 20 feet of depth per vehicle, 24 where trucks live.
Backing is the other half. Leaving a garage at ninety degrees into a drive narrower than about 20 feet means a three-point turn every time, and that is how people scuff the slab edge and break a corner off. A 10 by 20 foot bump-out beside the drive solves it for $1,500 to $3,500 within the same pour. What extra width costs, now versus later
Residential flatwork at 4 inches runs roughly $8 to $16 per square foot installed, and 6 inches with #4 rebar at 18 inches on center runs $12 to $20. Widening a 40 foot drive from 18 to 22 feet adds 160 square feet, so $1,300 to $3,200 on the same mobilization and the same base crew.
Adding it later costs more than that difference. A strip poured beside an existing slab is a cold joint, and it needs its own base, its own thickness and dowels into the old concrete. Width and curb cut limits usually sit in local zoning rather than the building code, whose model documents come from the International Code Council. Read the limit before you pour.
Frequently asked questions
How wide does a driveway need to be for two cars side by side? Eighteen feet is the minimum where both are midsize, and 22 to 24 feet if either is a full-size pickup or SUV. Below 18 feet the doors do not open enough to get out carrying anything.
Is 20 feet wide enough for two pickups? Barely. Two half-tons at 6 feet 10 inches each leave about 6 feet 4 inches split across three gaps, so with mirrors out somebody parks on the slab edge, which is where concrete breaks first.
Can I widen a driveway instead of replacing it? Yes, it is routine. Match the thickness, compact the new base, and dowel the joint with 3/4 inch smooth bar at 12 inches on center so the strip and the old slab move together. Expect a visible joint and a color difference that never blends.
